FCC Construcción completes Chile's longest bridge

FCC Construcción has completed Puente Industrial, Chile's longest bridge and the fourth to cross the BioBío River. Puente Industrial is a 6.5 km urban motorway in the Biobío Region and is a strategic project in terms of logistics connectivity, as it will increase the road capacity across the Biobío River by 33%, linking the municipalities of San Pedro de la Paz and Hualpén and significantly reducing travel times in the area. The bridge in operation is the first urban motorway concession outside the Metropolitan Region and will reduce daily driving times by 20%.

In recent years, the province of Concepción has seen a considerable increase in traffic congestion. To address this situation, both local authorities and the Chilean government proposed solutions aimed at reducing congestion, improving traffic flow to industrial areas, securing logistics routes in the region and reducing the risk of accidents. This led to the creation of the ‘Puente Industrial Road Concession’. This project, developed by the Ministry of Public Works, aims to improve the roads associated with productive areas in the Bío Bío region.

The project is divided into three sectors:

  • Sector A (north of the Industrial Bridge) connects the flows of the municipalities of Concepción, Talcahuano, Hualpén, and San Pedro de la Paz.
  • Sector B is the industrial bridge itself. It consists of a long structure that connects both banks of the Biobío River and crosses the Los Batros estuary. It is 2,520 metres long.
  • Sector C (south of the Industrial Bridge) is a link connecting the new motorway with Route 160.

The project has received an Environmental Qualification Resolution, which includes mitigation measures related to the protection of flora, fauna and cultural heritage, as well as mitigation measures related to the community in the area of direct influence. It has also received voluntary commitments, with collaboration from the communities involved. The Concepción Industrial Bridge project is a socially, environmentally and economically responsible project and a pioneer for the country.

FCC Construcción has extensive experience in the design and construction of bridges around the world, having built more than 1,650 bridges and viaducts of all types. Notable examples include the Vidin-Calafat bridge in Bulgaria and Romania; the viaduct over the Almonte River (Spain), the longest railway bridge in the world; the Gerald Desmond Bridge (Los Angeles, USA), the first cable-stayed bridge in California; the Mersey Bridge (Liverpool, United Kingdom), one of the 100 most important works in the world according to KPMG; and currently under construction, the Sotra Bridge (Norway), one of the country's largest infrastructure projects.
