FCC Construcción wins the contract to build the new berths at the Port of Barcelona
FCC Construcción has been awarded the contract to build the new berths at the Port of Barcelona, specifically berths 34C, 34D and 34E. The berths will be used for the supply of new fuels such as ammonia and methanol and represent an investment of €111.5 million. The 32 berths currently in operation date from the 1960s and are used for various types of liquid bulk cargo, i.e. multi-client and multi-product, but have become ‘obsolete’ due to the increasing tonnage, length and draught of ships. Thus, the 34 berths will serve to increase unloading capacity and organise traffic by product type, as well as reinforce the role of the Port of Barcelona as an “energy hub”.
Once the berths are operational, alongside the future pier-type berth 35, the current 32 berths will be refurbished for the loading and unloading of liquid bulk chemicals and agri-food products, as well as the construction of a facility for car carriers.
FCC Construcción is a historic leader in maritime engineering, whose history began precisely in the Port of Barcelona in 1900 with the construction of the España, Baleares, Nuevo and Pescadores quays. Over more than 125 years, the company has consolidated its global leadership through the execution of critical infrastructure projects such as the extension of the East Breakwater and the lengthening of the Attached Quay, standing out for its technical expertise in the manufacture of concrete caissons and the development of container and cruise ship terminals. With a track record of over 44 km of breakwaters and 32 km of quays built worldwide, FCC has transformed the Barcelona port into a state-of-the-art logistics hub, combining its founding legacy with modern engineering solutions for international trade.
