This week, the first precast beam positioning phase got underway. The 21 km viaduct will have 1,640 of these beams, the length of which will vary between 20 m and 30 m, reaching a weight of 161.5 tonnes. Installation is carried out by two cranes weighing 400 and 500 tonnes, which are assembled at night so as to minimise the impact on traffic. The start of the second beam-assembly phase is scheduled for the end of October this year.

The Project Management spokesman for Line 2, Francisco Gago, assured that the works are being carried out with the idea of expanding it in the future but, for now, both management and the contractor are keeping to the original 21 km elevated track design and 16 stations from San Miguelito (north), to Nuevo Tocumen (east), expected to accommodate a maximum of 40,000 passengers at rush hour in the future.

The Brazilian-Spanish consortium was awarded the tender to build Line 2 of the Panama Metro by submitting a bid of 1.857 billion dollars.

The PML2 Consortium, made up of Spanish company Ayesa Ingeniería y Arquitectura, American company The Louis Berger Group and also the Spanish Transporte Metropolitano de Barcelona are responsible for the project management.
