Description of the Environmental Measure

Problem detected:

A lack of knowledge by the site crew in implementing the management system meant that a training programme was required.

Solutions adopted:

Creation of a comprehensive programme of training and the provision of information; the most important support within the management system, to promote awareness.

Results:

  • 102,000 man hours of training.
  • General induction course of 5.5 hours when joining the project with an exam to determine the level of understanding.
  • Weekly 30-minute awareness meeting for all the workers on the project, led by the field engineers and by myself
  • Specific training when joining the project conducted before any workers begin operations. For a minimum of one hour this training included: hot work, working at height, confined spaces, locking and tagging, excavations and electric hand-held tools.  An exam to determine was held following the training to determine the level of understanding.
  • Daily safety meeting (5 min talk) before beginning starting work in the morning
  • Weekly training of the chain of command. In the meetings, performance of the chain of command to train the field engineers in its correct use and the effective application of the management tools
  • Nine or ten campaigns per year:
    • Hand care campaign and campaign to prevent sexually transmitted diseases
    • Campaign on the world occupational health and safety day
    • Sun protection campaign
    • Health and safety campaign during hoisting operations
