New York City Subway Expansion (Second Avenue Phase 2)
It involves the drilling of a 2.4-kilometre tunnel beneath the iconic Second Avenue. This phase will enable the Q line to be extended northwards (from 96th Street to 125th Street), ultimately bringing the heavy rail service to the East Harlem neighbourhood.
The works involve drilling tunnels 6.7 metres in diameter to depths of between 10 and 36 metres beneath one of the world’s busiest and most densely populated avenues. A large 750-tonne tunnel-boring machine will be used to minimise the impact on the surrounding skyscrapers and underground utilities.
