FCC Construcción receives the first partial completion certificate for the A-9 motorway expansion project (Netherlands)
FCC Construcción has obtained the first partial completion certificate for the A-9 motorway widening project, Badhoevedorp – Holendrecht (Netherlands). This is a special milestone marking the accelerated completion of New East.
This milestone marks the opening of a 7.5 km section between the Holendrecht and Amstelveen junctions, widening the A-9 motorway to four lanes in each direction. This results in a substantial improvement in traffic flow, the decongestion of the A-9 junction with the A-2, and a reduction in average journey times across the area.
The project involves the refurbishment of an 11.4 km section of the A9 motorway between Badhoevedorp and Holendrecht. The works consist of widening the carriageway from three to four lanes in each direction, with the corresponding expansion of existing structures (11), new junctions with other roads, as well as bridges and tunnels. In this regard, a 1.7 km section stands out where the plan is to lower the road level (currently on an embankment) and convert it into a cut-and-cover section, with three covered sub-sections. The project has been carried out whilst maintaining traffic flow on the existing motorway and minimising the impact on the urban environment.
Furthermore, the scope of the concession includes maintenance for two years following the completion of construction works. The new covered areas will serve to regenerate the more urban part of the area, creating new spaces for green areas, roads, etc., with the ‘Tree Bridge’—a highly distinctive architectural bridge situated over the enclosed section of the Keizer Karelweg—being one of the project’s most significant features.
