The Nou Mestalla begins raising its roof with one of the project’s most complex engineering operations
Work on the Nou Mestalla has reached a new construction milestone with the start of the so-called “Big Lift”, the operation to raise the large cable structure that will form the load-bearing system of the stadium’s future roof. This is one of the most distinctive and technically complex phases of the entire construction process, both due to its scale and the precision required for its execution. This operation involves the lifting, connection and permanent fixing of the roof cable network to the stadium’s compression ring.
The operation will transform the temporary configuration of the structural elements—currently assembled at pitch level—into the final geometry designed for the future stadium’s roof. The network comprises upper and lower radial cables, annular cables, connectors, rigid and flexible hangers, and structural struts, all of which will be raised in a synchronised manner to their final positions.
To achieve this, a synchronised lifting system will be used, employing hydraulic jacks installed on the compression ring, acting simultaneously on the various axes of the roof. The process will be carried out in successive phases, ensuring at all times that the structure’s geometry is controlled and that loads are balanced during the lifting operation.
Over the coming weeks, the various phases of the Big Lift will be completed, including the gradual raising of the radial cables, the sequential connection of the suspension cables, the installation of the rigid struts and the prestressing of the bracing elements that will provide the final rigidity to the structural assembly.
The start of this operation marks the beginning of a new stage in the construction of the Nou Mestalla roof. Once the ‘Big Lift’ is complete, work will continue with the assembly of the secondary structure and the service walkways, followed by the installation of the arches and the membrane that will give the stadium its final appearance.
With this phase, work on the Nou Mestalla is moving towards the final configuration of one of the most iconic architectural features of the future stadium: a roof of great structural complexity designed to offer protection, comfort and a unique visual identity to Valencia CF’s new home.
