FCC recognised for the construction of the Puerta del Sol local train station in Madrid

The new local train station at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, built by FCC, has been recognised by the Civil Engineers Association as the Best Public Works project in 2009 in the Madrid region.

The panel of judges evaluated the magnitude and difficulties of the technical and environmental challenges faced and the affected services affected which had to be resolved in the city's historical centre and kilometre 0. Once resolved, this station has become an emblematic example of public transport in our Community and a reference for the kind of work that is done by FCC's civil engineers.

The participants in the project included:
• The Rail Infrastructure Management Team: Javier Gallego López, Emilio de la Torre Sánchez and Pedro María Lekuona García and Construction Directors.
• The Project Management Team: Francisco Sánchez Ayala, as Project Manager and Guillermo Dierssen Sotos as author (Sener Eurocontrol JV).
• From the FCC Construcción and CONVENSA Joint Venture: Avelino J. Acero Díaz, Alejandro Cisneros Müller, Ricardo Gil Edo, Juan Girón Garrido, as Manager of the Joint Venture and José Luis del Valle Sánchez-Prieto as Works Superintendent.
• Technical Assistance: Miguel Guerrero Igea (Prointec).

The General Manager of FCC Construcción, Avelino Acero, accepted the award from the Secretary of State for Planning and Infrastructure, a branch of the Ministry of Development, at the ceremony held on 26 November 2009.

The Puerta del Sol Station, inaugurated on 27 June by Spain's President, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is part of a new local rail connection linking Atocha and Chamartin.

The cavern of the station, which is the only one of its kind in the world, is 207 metres long and 15 metres high and was designed on two levels: a lower level where the platforms are located and a mezzanine level which provides passengers access to the platforms.
