FCC starts work on Vigo’s new high-speed train station

On Sunday, 25 September, Minister of Development José Blanco toured the site where ground has just been broken for the new Vigo-Urzáiz Station, part of the Atlantic High-Speed Corridor.

This civil engineering project has a budget of close to 67.5 million euro. It involves the enlargement of the present platforms and rail yard, plus the demolition of the old station, which was closed to traffic on 28 August last. The new station will be the terminal that ties together the entire Vigo city rail system, within the framework of the Atlantic High-Speed Corridor. The new station shares the same coordinates as the old building but sits at a lower elevation.

The new station

The new Vigo-Urzáiz Station will comply with the European Union's high-speed interoperability standards. In addition, the facility has been designed with six sets of tracks, two 400-metre platforms and two 350-metre platforms, situated so as to allow passenger operations on all tracks.
