FCC Construcción win contract to design and build Phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway in New York City

The contract is worth more than €1.5 billion and was awarded to the Connect Plus Partners (Connect+) consortium, a joint venture between FCC Construcción and Halmar International. Connect+ is proud to have assembled a cost effective solution, featuring state of the art and innovative approaches for the Phase 2 project. The contract to design and build two tunnels that will enable the development of two new New York subway stations. These new stations in Harlem represent a key step forward in the extension of the Second Avenue subway line northwards from the Upper East Side to East Harlem.
The contract includes the conversion of a 762-metre tunnel, a cost-containment measure for the project, built in the 1970s between 116th and 125th Streets, into a station. It also involves the drilling of a 2,560-metre tunnel to Malcolm X Boulevard and the excavation of the cavern for the 125th Street station, as well as the excavation of shafts for auxiliary buildings and future accesses.
The tunnel will be excavated using two variable-density Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) manufactured in Germany, weighing 1.5 million pounds, which can switch between soft soil and hard rock without needing to be dismantled. According to estimates by the client, MTA, together with phase 1, which runs from 72nd Street to 96th Street, the Second Avenue line is expected to carry around 300,000 passengers per day.
