FCC Construcción to build Spain's first nuclear fusion research centre

FCC Construcción, in consortium with Ferrovial and local construction company Añil, has been awarded the main contract for the design and construction of IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – DEMO Oriented Neutron Source), one of Europe's most ambitious technological projects, which will be located in Escúzar, Granada. These scientific facilities, promoted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Regional Government of Andalusia, will house two particle accelerators designed to study the effects of nuclear fusion on different materials.

FCC Construcción will participate in the execution of an initial framework agreement with a budget of €174 million to begin the design and construction of the infrastructure that will house the experimental nuclear facility. The main building is scheduled to begin operations at the end of 2029.

IFMIF-DONES will become a unique scientific facility in the world that will allow the neutron flux produced in a nuclear fusion reactor to be simulated. These neutrons will irradiate the materials under study to test their behaviour and contribute to the development of new technologies for fusion energy generation.

This project reinforces FCC Construcción's position as an international benchmark in the execution of large technological infrastructures. The company is currently designing and executing the Pallas nuclear reactor (Netherlands). This is a key project for the secure supply of medical isotopes to patients around the world. Medical isotopes are used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The PALLAS reactor will also contribute to research into CO2-free energy supply. The reactor will use a new type of nuclear fuel that is more efficient and produces less radioactive waste
