The Austrian World's Fair office awarded the contract for the construction of the Austrian pavilion to Alpine, FCC's Austrian subsidiary, in 2009. Work began in July of last year and construction ended on schedule in March 2010. The pavilion cost 5.5 million euro to build.

The exhibit space, an area of more than 2,100 square metres, has a shop, a restaurant and a roomy garden for visitors. The pavilion's attractive design was produced by the Viennese studio Architects SPAN Zeytinoglu and the Shanghai Xiandai (Group) Co. design group. Alpine built the pavilion and installed the building systems and multimedia systems.

The Shanghai Expo, which is open until 31 October and is being held under the general motto of "Better City, Better Life", expects to welcome 70 million visitors and more than 200 participating nations. At the close of the fair, the Austrian pavilion will be dismantled.

Alpine is currently employing about 500 people from seven nations in China. Some of Alpine's projects in China are: the Ningbo Expressway, the Yellow River Diversion Project Tunnel 1, the BASF-YPC/IPS maintenance and engineering centre, the Haefele hardware factory, the ABB Turb DSystems factory, the Degussa Technical Centre and the enlargement of the German School.
