King Salman International Airport begins construction of a third runway to improve operational efficiency and support future growth
King Salman International Airport, a Public Investment Fund (PIF) company, has commenced construction work on the third runway, a strategic step that reflects the continued progress in the development of the aerodrome and improves the airport's operational readiness to support the long-term growth in air traffic demand.
The third runway is a key component of the KSIA Master Plan and represents an important milestone in the airport's expansion process. The project is being carried out in collaboration withAl-Mabani General Contracting Company and FCC Construcción , and has been designed in accordance with the prevailing wind patterns in Riyadh to ensure the safety and efficiency of air operations in all operating conditions.
Current operational capacity is 65 aircraft movements per hour. With the implementation of operational improvements and the introduction of the third runway, capacity is expected to increase to 85 aircraft movements per hour, which will contribute to improved operational efficiency and support long-term growth.
The third runway incorporates multiple access taxiways to ensure a smooth flow of aircraft and will be 4,200 metres long.
King Salman International Airport is a strategic and transformative national project that reflects the Kingdom's ambition to position Riyadh as a global capital and leading aviation hub. The project was announced by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of King Salman International Airport International Airport, underscoring its national importance and role in advancing the goals of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
Located on the current site of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the airport will incorporate the King Khalid terminals, as well as three new terminals, residential and leisure assets, six runways and logistics facilities. Covering an area of 57 square kilometres, it is designed to handle 100 million passengers per year and manage more than 2 million tonnes of cargo by 2030.
This phase of construction contributes to strengthening the international flight network of King Salman International Airport to multiple global destinations, consolidating Riyadh's position as an internationally connected air gateway and supporting national development objectives within the air transport sector.
