Artifex, Roman engineering in Spain

Today saw the inauguration of the Artifex Roman Engineering in Spain exhibition in the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida, with the collaboration of the Ministry for Development, the Ministry for the Arts, the Fundación Juanelo Turriano and FCC Construcción.

The exhibition shows the immense technical legacy of the Roman world with the application of its knowledge to civil engineering in Hispania, describing the procedures and techniques used by the artifex (artisan), the materials and machinery used in building public works, the systems for supplying water to cities and the building of infrastructures for land and sea transport.

The exhibition includes a catalogue sponsored by FCC Construcción containing 12 articles by university specialists and researchers into the historical and technical aspects of the various areas of engineering and industry in the Roman era in Hispania, from the building of bridges and aqueducts to dyeing, roads and mining.
