FCC Construcción wins contract for a motorway section in north-eastern Romania

FCC Construcción has won a contract worth €770 million for a motorway section in north-eastern Romania. This infrastructure has been described by the National Road Investment Company (CNIR) as being of vital importance, as it will link the Romanian cities of Târgu Neamț and Iași with the town of Ungheni in the Republic of Moldova. As it is a key transport link with Moldova, the project will be funded by the SAFE Programme, the European funding mechanism for strategic and military investments.

The award of the so-called ‘Union Motorway’ to FCC Construcción is due, in the client’s words, “to its solid experience in major international infrastructure projects. The A8 motorway is a project of strategic and European significance”.

The works will take at least 46 months, of which ten will be devoted to design and a further 36 to project execution. This section will involve the construction of 18 bridges and overpasses, six tunnels and a tunnel supervision and control centre, as well as two junctions and a road intersection. It is worth noting that the tunnels will be the widest in Romania.

FCC Construcción has been operating in Romania since 2003 and has carried out major infrastructure projects during this time. These include the Basarab underpass in Bucharest, Line 5 of the Bucharest Metro, the modernisation of several railway lines in the Transylvania region, as well as motorway sections, including the Pan-European Corridor IV between Timișoara and Arad, the A4 motorway and the Constanța ring road. Currently, FCC Construcción is primarily involved in various railway projects, but the award of this contract marks a significant return to the motorway construction sector in Romania.
