FCC Construcción signs an agreement to reduce the carbon footprint of the 3rd Runway project at King Salman International Airport (Riyadh)
FCC Construcción, together with Saudi Building Company, Almabani, Carbon Cure Canada and Carbon Cure Technologies, has signed an agreement to implement low-carbon concrete technology in the 3rd Runway of King Salman International Airport (Riyadh) project. This agreement will enable a reduction in the carbon footprint of the aforementioned project.
The project comprises a new CAT III runway with a total length of 4,905 m, three parallel taxiways, twelve rapid exit taxiways and perimeter taxiways at each end to accommodate Code C aircraft (Phase 1), as well as perimeter taxiways for Code E and F aircraft to the north and south in Phase 2.
This collaboration will introduce cutting-edge carbon mineralisation technology into concrete production, enabling the permanent sequestration of approximately 6,800 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, whilst reducing embodied carbon emissions by an estimated 5–10 per cent.
This innovative solution improves the performance of the concrete, optimises cement usage and supports the project’s environmental objectives without compromising production efficiency, thereby reinforcing FCC Construcción’s leadership in sustainable, low-carbon construction practices.
The agreement is being implemented through a strategic partnership with CarbonCure Technologies, a world leader in carbon mineralisation solutions. An innovative CO₂ mineralisation technology has been implemented, which permanently converts captured and recycled CO₂ into stable calcium carbonate within the concrete during the batching process.
In turn, a large-scale implementation is planned at a batching plant expected to produce approximately 400,000 m³ of concrete, resulting in improved concrete performance, offering greater compressive strength and optimising cement content alongside quality, durability and structural integrity.
It will be seamlessly integrated into existing batching operations and will have no impact on production efficiency or concrete delivery times. All this is achieved through the adoption of cutting-edge, low-carbon construction technology, enabling us to align with the project’s sustainability objectives and reduce its environmental footprint.
