FCC Construcción has its 2010 greenhouse gas emissions report verified

Of the nine Spanish companies holding verification, FCC Construcción is the very first construction company to earn verification of its greenhouse gas -GHG- emissions inventory from AENOR, an accredited greenhouse gas verification authority.
FCC Construcción is pioneering progress again, by striving for the development of protocols to quantify and reduce GHG emissions. Although FCC's GHG emissions are, quantitatively speaking, not very significant in the construction sector, greenhouse gases are associated with climate change, an environmental problem with clear worldwide repercussions.
Therefore a greenhouse gas measurement protocol was introduced during the course of 2010 that will more accurately quantify the emissions released by construction and identify opportunities for improvement.
Mainstreaming the problem of climate change into our organization's strategy also gives us a clear competitive advantage, since the government has decided to reward sustainable conduct. A working group has been created along these lines to include the corporate carbon footprint as a factor in public procurement. The working group is looking at the possibility of making the carbon footprint of suppliers and/or their products or services a prerequisite or scorable item in specifications.
The report gives the 2010 GHG inventory of the activities carried out at FCC Construcción sites and permanent facilities located in Spain. The report was conducted and verified in accordance with the requirements set in UNE-ISO 14064-1:2006: "Specification with guidance at the organizational level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals". Furthermore, the report abides by the sector-wide reference set by the European Network of Construction Companies for Research and Development (ENCORD), "Construction CO2 Measurement Protocol".
The report includes the quantification of the GHG emissions reduced (emissions avoided) in 2010 thanks to the introduction of good practices at FCC sites.
FCC Construcción's GHG emissions are quantified under the focus of operational control, and the operational limits are defined in terms of the following scopes:
• Scope 1: Direct GHG emissions from sources that belong to or are controlled by the company.
• Scope 2: Indirect GHG emissions associated with the generation of electricity consumed by the company.
• Scope 3: Other indirect emissions resulting from the company's activities but produced at sources that neither belong to nor are controlled by FCC Construcción.
