María Carrasco appointed member of the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance

On 21 January, the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance publicly announced the 35 members appointed for its third term, including María Luisa Carrasco Martínez, CFO of FCC Construcción (Spain), confirmed as permanent representative of the construction sector.

The EU Sustainable Finance Platform is an advisory body to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (DG FISMA), responsible for reviewing the technical criteria of the Taxonomy Regulation. The previous term officially ended in March 2025, and the new term will run from February 2026 to the end of 2027.

The construction sector plays a key role in economic development and employment in Europe. In 2024, it accounted for 7.9% of the EU's GDP and provided nearly 12 million direct jobs. The European construction industry has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, a goal that will require significant reductions in industrial emissions and greater circularity across the construction value chain. Achieving this transition will depend on substantial investments, making access to green finance essential. The EU taxonomy, as a cornerstone of sustainable finance, must recognise and reward contractors' contribution to sustainability and resilience goals. By redirecting capital towards sustainable construction projects and establishing robust indicators to assess long-term investment performance, the sector can fully realise its potential as a driver of both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

María Carrasco is Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of FCC Construcción. She brings extensive experience in international sustainable finance, particularly in the European market. The company is among the top ten construction companies in Europe and carries out major infrastructure projects around the world. In her role as CFO, she has demonstrated excellence in overseeing capital allocation and aligning project financing with sustainability criteria, supporting investment decisions in line with the evolving EU regulatory framework. As a member of the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance, she will ensure that the knowledge and perspectives of the construction sector are effectively represented, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the EU Sustainable Finance Framework.

FIEC already participated in the Platform on Sustainable Finance during its 2020-2022 term and therefore welcomes DG FISMA's latest appointment decision. High-level experts from the construction sector will bring great value to the development of the EU taxonomy, as well as to improving the user-friendliness and practicality of the EU Sustainable Finance Framework in general.
