When fully assembled, the movable scaffolding will be 157 m long, 8 m high and 22 m wide at its peak. It will also weigh 1,700 tons. With no English companies capable of supplying this machinery, the movable scaffolding has been built in China and will arrive in Runcorn next month.

The new machine will be assembled on the first stack approach viaduct, positioned 12.5 m above ground level. The Merseylink Consortium decided to use a second machine to avoid the time it would mounting and dismounting of Trinity and its corresponding shift to the south bank of the river.

Richard Walker, project manager of Merseylink, noted that "in a project of this scale a degree of flexibility in the program so that it is possible to make improvements when necessary is required. Using a new movable scaffolding MSS will provide us with greater capacity and it will allow us to strengthen planning to open the bridge in the autumn of 2017 ".

Halton schools have been invited to participate in a contest to name the machine, which will start working on the south side in September this year. Walker added that "it will be very exciting to have two giant machines as they work on the project at the same time. The team is eager to know the new name of the movable scaffolding and start its route the same way as was done with ‘Trinity’”.
