Ribbon cutting at Alicante Tram’s Luceros Station
Recipient of a 50-million-euro investment, the tram will carry five million passengers a year from the heart of the city

On 18 June last the Luceros-Mercado section of the Alicante Tram System, part of Phase One of the system's construction, was opened. The section was built by a joint venture featuring FCC. The work included the underground Luceros Station and its connection with the central Mercado Station through a 476-metre-long tunnel having a cross-section of 70 square metres.
Passengers can now ride directly from the railway station in the centre of Alicante to the beach at Playa de San Juan without having to transfer to Line 4. From the beach travellers can head to El Campello, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Altea and Denia on Lines 1 and 3.
Luceros Station
Luceros Station is situated underground at one of the landmarks of the city of Alicante. Designed by architect Javier García Solera, the station lies beneath the intersection of the city's two primary avenues, Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio and Avenida de la Estación, with Avenida de General Marvá and Avenida de Federico Soto.
The station is 115 metres long, 20 metres wide and 20 metres tall. It has two levels, the vestibule and the platform, at a depth of 18 metres.
In order for the work on the station's structure to be done, the landmark monument of Fuente de los Luceros had to be taken down and then reassembled.
There is a panoramic lift for people with reduced mobility in the Plaza de los Luceros, in the centre of a great sunken courtyard that allows natural light to shine into the heart of the station vestibule. The vestibule contains plants and a fountain and is scheduled in future to house a shopping area.
