Murcia Social Integration Centre opened

The new Guillermo Miranda González de Echávarri Social Integration Centre, built by FCC Construcción, is situated on the road to Mazarrón, bordering with the provincial prison. The social integration centre was opened on 7 April last by Secretary-General of Penitentiary Institutions Mercedes Gallizo Llamas, in the presence of the national government's deputy in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, the chairman of SIEP (the state penitentiary infrastructure company), Ángel Martínez Sanjuán, and other top dignitaries of the region.

Social integration centres are establishments intended basically as places where convicts can serve out open prison terms and weekend detention sentences. The activity in social integration centres is meant to strengthen the social integration capacities of the people who are interned there, by running activities and treatment programmes designed to ease inmates' re-entry into the social environment.

The centre is laid out in the shape of a comb, with the dormitory buildings and the production workshop set perpendicular to the service building. In the spaces thus created between buildings lie an athletic field and a number of small gardens.

The complex has two storeys, except the dormitory buildings, which have three. The social integration centre contains 152 rooms and various areas that differ according to their intended uses and their accessibility by inmates, officials and visitors.
