FCC to improve regional road 503 in northwest Poland

The DGGKiA, Poland's General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways, has awarded FCC a contract to renovate regional road 503 through the cities of Elbląg, Tolkmicko and Pogrodzie in the northwestern Polish region of Warmia-Masuria.
The work will consist in widening and improving a 24.3-kilometre-long section of the road through Elbląg and Pogrodzie. For most of this length, the old pavement will be used as the subbase for the new road, and the way will be widened into a two-lane roadway a total of six metres wide with no verges, plus a one-metre berm or else a two-metre pedestrian pavement with a kerb. In addition, the various layers of pavement will be changed, and the existing structures (a total of eight one-span structures) will be refurbished. Cost-wise, the animal crossings -64 polymer concrete units- are some of the salient points of the project.
Because the section runs largely inside cities and towns, many utility lines, including telecommunications and power lines, will be replaced. Traffic lights will be replaced too, although to a lesser extent.
The project, which will be jointly funded by the European Union, has a contract budget of 13.5 million euro and a scheduled completion period of 24 months.
FCC digs in in Poland
FCC has a steady presence in Poland, where it is working on building a tram for the city of Olsztyn. In addition, FCC's Austrian subsidiary ALPINE is participating in major projects such as the construction of several stadiums for the 2012 European Football Championship, one of which, the Gdansk Arena, is a masterpiece of design.
