FCC-built I-95 Miami Express receives an award from AASHTO

On 31st August, at its annual meeting in Biloxi, SASHTO, the southeastern regional section of AASHTO -of which Florida is a member state-, granted the prestigious 2009 America's Transportation Award in the Innovative Management category to the I-95 Miami Express highway built by FCC for the Florida Transportation Department, which developed a set of novel management techniques that ensure the initiative's success.

The award values new policies and procedures in transportation solutions that improve the movement of people, goods and services and provide transport efficiency, increased security, traffic accessibility and management and benefit to the community.

SASHTO, founded to promote and support efficient transport in the southeastern United States, regarded the Department's management very positively.

The award was given to the Florida Transportation Department for the innovative "Express Lane" traffic management system. These separate lanes allow motorists to drive faster and bypass any traffic jams in the regular lanes by paying a toll that varies according to the driving speed of the other lanes. If the speed in the other lanes is very low (at rush hours), the toll goes up, and if the speed is very high, the toll goes down. Speed is measured by traffic management cameras that automatically determine how the toll varies.
