FCC Awarded Contract for European-funded Polish Bypass
FCC is to build Szczuczyn Bypass on Expressway S61 for 31 million euros
Poland's Directorate General of Roads has awarded FCC Construcción the 31.2-million-euro contract to build the new Szczuczyn Bypass on Expressway S61. The project, to be completed in 15 months, is financed with European Commission funds.
The new bypass is located in Podlaskie Voivodeship in northeast Poland and will help free up the heavy traffic with the Baltic countries.
The project is a total of eight kilometres long, and it has two sections, one with a dual roadway, and the other with a single roadway. The dual-roadway section is 1.5 kilometres long and lies in the area where a new junction will be built between Expressway S61 and National Road 8. The single-roadway section will be 5.3 kilometres long, with 3.5-metre-wide lanes in both directions.
The project includes the construction of nine bridges whose lengths range between 12.14 metres and 78.60 metres. The bridges are of many different types, including precast beam deck, continuous prestressed concrete slab and box girder.
Cross-drainage will be built in at seven spots, using seven metal ovoid drains. Also, all affected services will be restored, lighting will be installed and sound barriers will be put up.
FCC Construcción in Poland
The Infrastructure and Services Group has been working in Poland for several years now. FCC Construcción has had a permanent branch office in Warsaw for a year, handling work done in the sector under FCC's own brand name. Szczuczyn Bypass is the third contract FCC has won directly.
FCC is also currently working on the design and construction of a tramway for the city of Olsztyn and the renovation of regional road 503 through the cities of Elbląg, Tolkmicko and Pogrodzie, in the region of Warmian-Masurian, in northwest Poland.
Through its Austrian subsidiary, ALPINE, which is the group's traditional liaison for work in Poland, FCC has participated in major projects such as the construction of the Polish stadiums hosting the UEFA Euro 2012, the Nationalstadion in Warsaw, the Baltic Gdansk Arena, the modernization of Krakow Stadium and Poznan Stadium.
