FCC Construcción received the Merit Award in the Health category at the ENR Global Best Projects 2013 Awards, for the building of the New Acute Hospital for the South West, Enniskillen Hospital, in Northern Ireland.
At the ceremony held in New York on the evening of June 6th, Pedro Carlos Vega, Regional Director of FCC Construcción in the USA, accompanied by Jesús de la Fuente, Development Manager for North America accepted the award from Scott Blair, the Editor of ENR California, who first voiced his praise for the civil engineering company’s work on the project.
These awards are given out by Engineering News-Record (ENR), the leading construction and engineering sector publication. Recognition is given to construction projects based on a number of criteria including safety issues, innovative design solutions, teamwork and response to the challenges involved, contribution to the industry and the community and the quality of the design, construction and craftsmanship.
Following adjudication, FCC were contracted to build the hospital, which represents a 340 million investment, and is the first project in a major new development program, involving collaboration between the public and private sectors, designed to improve infrastructures throughout the United Kingdom.
The project began in May 2009 when the Western Health and Social Care Trust signed the concession contract with the Northern Ireland Health Group consortium, for the design, construction, funding and use of the new Enniskillen hospital.
FCC completed building work over a three year period. The new health facilities were opened in June 2012.
The new hospital has 315 beds in individual rooms and the building covers 65,000 square meters. It offers all the very latest in medical technology and patient care, with a wide range of specialist treatments available to complement the services already provided at the nearby Erne Hospital.
There is a separate building for staff accommodation and the specially designed power control system makes it one of the most energy efficient buildings of its type in Europe. The design, made up of three blocks separated by gardens and patios, allows the optimum use of natural light and ventilation as well as an aesthetically pleasing relationship with the surrounding area.
When the hospital keys were handed over at the end of May last year, the President of the Western Health and Social Carte Trust, Elaine Way, personally gave thanks to all those involved in the planning and construction which has made possible this magnificent hospital, in particular FCC, who have worked so hard to ensure that the hospital has been built to the highest standards of quality, on time and within the budget.
