On 14 January the Spanish Minister of Culture, César Antonio Molina, opened the new facilities at the Simancas General Archive, which has been extended and renovated by FCC Construcción.The renovation and extensión of the Simancas General Archive was begun in 2003, with a budget of 11.6 million euros.

The work on the castle building has solved the former flow problems between the various rooms, extended the archive space, restored the research rooms and adapted the infrastructure to the new technologies. An entrance annex has also been built, and work has been done to covert the old moat into a public walkway.

FCC Construcción has published a book on the history of this unique building and renovation and extension work that has been done.
