FCC was presented by the Entorno Foundation with one of the distinctions in the Spanish division of the European Environment Awards. Baldomero Falcones, chairman and CEO of the Citizen Service Group, received the award from the Prince and Princess of Asturias, who presided over the ceremony held at the CSIC, Spain's High Council of Scientific Research.

"Design and Introduction of a Protocol for the Quantification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Building" is the FCC Construcción project that garnered an honourable mention in the Management for Sustainable Development category. The project is a pioneer in its sector and consists in the introduction of a greenhouse gas (GHG) measuring protocol, thanks to which the emissions released by building activity can be better known and rigorously quantified.

The protocol makes it possible to evaluate emissions sources, monitor emissions, propose improvement and reduction commitments and effectively manage the risks of climate change. The protocol, designed for compliance with ISO 14064's requirements, was approved in 2010. In May 2011 FCC's 2010 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report was verified by AENOR, an accredited verification organisation.

FCC Construcción's project entails a clear benefit for the environment and therefore for society in general. In addition, it will indirectly lend the central government a hand in living up to its European GHG commitments, since it provides an exhaustive knowledge of the emissions released in building activity. Internally it helps consolidate the corporate culture and values, in addition to strengthening the introduction of a large set of good practices implemented earlier in the Building division. Externally, sharing news of the project with FCC's stakeholders helps pass along knowledge and encourage other companies to take the same sort of initiative.

Others prize-winners alongside FCC were Abengoa, which took home the top award, also in the category of Management for Sustainable Development, while the winning SME in the category was the Matarromera Group. In the Product/Service for Sustainable Development category, the winners were Técnicas Reunidas (corporations) and Adocrín (SMEs); in the Process for Sustainable Development category, the top firms were SENER Ingeniería y Systemas (corporations) and Teaxul (SMEs), with an honourable mention for Shuton.

In the International Business Cooperation for Sustainable Development category, the award went to the Tragsa Group (corporations) and Colegio Calasancio de Bilbao (SMEs).

The European Environment Awards for Enterprises are held by the European Commission's Directorate-General of the Environment. The Spanish division of the awards is backed by the Entorno Foundation/BCSD España, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment and sponsored by the OHL Group.

El proyecto presentado por FCC Construcción conlleva un claro beneficio para el Medio Ambiente y por lo tanto para la Sociedad en general. Además contribuirá indirectamente con la Administración central al cumplimiento de sus compromisos en Europa en materia de gases de efecto invernadero, ya que a través del conocimiento exhaustivo de las emisiones generadas en la actividad de construcción. Internamente contribuye a la consolidación de la cultura y valores corporativos, además de reforzar la anterior implantación de otro gran conjunto de Buenas Prácticas en la división de Construcción. Externamente, con la difusión del proyecto a nuestros grupos de interés, se contribuye a la transmisión del conocimiento y al impulso de la implantación de esta iniciativa en otras compañías.

Junto a FCC, resultaron premiados Abengoa, con el máximo galardón también en la categoría de Gestión para el Desarrollo Sostenible, y en la que en el apartado pyme fue premiado el Grupo Matarromera. En la categoría "Producto/Servicio para el Desarrollo Sostenible" se premió a Técnicas Reunidas (gran empresa) y Adocrín (pyme); mientras, por Proceso para el Desarrollo Sostenible se ha distinguido a SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas (gran empresa) y a Teaxul (pyme) y un accésit a Shuton.

En cuanto a la categoría de Cooperación Empresarial Internacional para el Desarrollo Sostenible, el Premio se ha dirigido a Grupo Tragsa (gran empresa) y al Colegio Calasancio de Bilbao (pyme).

Los Premios Europeos de Medio Ambiente a la Empresa están convocados por la Dirección General de Medio Ambiente de la Comisión Europea. En su edición española, cuentan con el respaldo de la Fundación Entorno-BCSD España; el apoyo del Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, y el patrocinio del Grupo OHL.
