The Greek Minister of Public Works and the Environment visits the Athens metro works

Giorgios Souflias, the Minister of Public Works and the Environment, visited the work being carried out by FCC Construcción in Athens for Attiko Metro on 9 May. The Minister was accompanied by the Chairman of the, George Yannis, and by the General Director, Theodoros Kontogiannopoulos, who could examine the quality of the work and its progress - over 50% of the civil engineering complete - on site.
The work consists of extending line 2 of the Athens Metro from the shunting yard at the Aghios Antonios end by 2 km, including the new Peristeri and Anthoupoli stations. The project requires building a 303 m tunnel under the Panagi Tsaldari Avenue, an access shaft, eastern and western ventilation shafts, the renovation of the end shaft, the dismantling of a tunnel boring machine left from the first project, pedestrian cesses to the stations, deviation of services in the streets and their repositioning. The project involved a certain degree of complexity around Peristeri where 45 m of the station had to be built in a cavern using mining techniques, together with two sloping galleries for pedestrian access.
The project is scheduled for handover at the end of 2009, including all the electromechanical installations, the track and the third rail traction power supply. The final value of the work is €87 million.
