FCC Construcción has been the winner of the award that the Construction Technology Platform, in collaboration with Tecnalia, has announced, in its first edition, for the Best National Innovation Project 2023. The award-winning project was “0ACCIDNTES” (RESEARCH OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH IN CONSTRUCTION WITH “0 ACCIDENTS”).

The criteria offered for the concession have been, on the one hand, and in terms of technological excellence, the clarity and relevance of the project objectives and the degree to which the proposed work has been ambitious, going beyond the state of the art, and On the other hand, regarding its impact on the sector, the potential of the results to achieve positive impacts on the sector, in the social and environmental fields, has been assessed.

This project, led by FCC Construcción and developed with the business partners BECSA, FRACTALIA, METALICAS PLÁSTICAS JAR, ALISYS, IDP, LIS DATA AND SIGNE, has the collaboration of the ITAINNOVA, CETIM and AIMPLAS technology centers and the collaboration of the Technological Platform Spanish Construction Company (PTEC) and INCOTEC as an external R&D&I consultant. It has been financed by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) through the CIEN Strategic Program.

The objective of the innovation work carried out has been to develop a comprehensive cognitive ecosystem for the real-time monitoring and prediction of dangerous situations for the safety and health of 21st century construction workers, by carrying out research that would allow the intelligent and automatic collection, interpretation, digitization and management of information generated in different construction environments, based on state-of-the-art sensors, autonomous robotic systems, cyber-secure connectivity ecosystems and various elements of artificial intelligence.

The strategic lines of research to be able to develop monitoring systems of high precision and quality of information, as well as tools and predictive models that anticipate and act in the face of changing and dangerous situations are:

1. Research in AI predictive models for early detection of fatigue.
2. Research in smart PPE.
3. Research in shared situational awareness of machines and people.
4. Research in virtual air quality sensors.
5. Research in artificial vision systems for risk detection through the identification of objects and/or people and understanding scenes.
6. Research on locating people indoors and at heights.
7. Research in digital identity of operators and digital security passport.
8. Research in reliable and secure connectivity (5G) scenarios.

The different prototypes are validated through simulations carried out in controlled construction environments, which allow the identification of weaknesses and limitations of the developments carried out, as well as their solution. The environments chosen to validate the developments carried out are both linear work, such as tunnels and/or roads, as well as vertical work, such as buildings.

This recognition highlights, on the one hand, the work carried out in terms of occupational health and safety and, on the other, the leading positioning of FCC Construcción in terms of safety, with work that will result in greater care for people and in a significant improvement in the work environment.
