FCC Construcción has joined the human rights management working group, created by the United Nations Global Compact. Human rights are one of the strongest pillars of the work and reason for the UN Global Compact; as well as key to the commitment of the more than 1,600 organizations that participate in it in our country. It links the initiative with the values of the United Nations, providing differential value for its members. However, it is an area whose work needs to be encouraged for different reasons, including business training, an aspect that we want to address with the launch of this Human Rights Learning Group.
Following the latest data from the publication, “SDG Year 8. Economic profitability and Agenda 2030: sustainability as a synonym for business for companies”, the number of listed companies that work on human rights in our country has increased by 153% since year 2016. However, it is still the least worked area of the Ten Principles, with 48% of organizations, behind the environment, labor standards and the fight against corruption.
In a rapidly changing context, influenced by the arrival of new regulations, the need to identify, mitigate and adequately manage business risks in terms of human rights is urgent. Providing resources and mechanisms for this is the leiv motive of this learning space so that companies can work with relevant and specific materials, share experiences, knowledge and challenges among equals.
In this way, 46 member entities of the Global Compact have decided to train specifically with this learning group. Companies that have previous work in the matter, based on specific policies and due diligence processes.
The organizations belonging to this group will have the opportunity to strengthen their commitment to human rights and mature their work in business sustainability within the framework of the UN 2030 Agenda thanks to a plan planned for two years.
Respect for human rights is key to well-understood business sustainability. In fact, six of the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact address this issue, and must be practiced by all participants in the leading initiative in business sustainability. The first two are addressed exclusively and the following four, from the perspective of labor standards.
