National prize for sustainable architectural culture and town planning

The jury for the Foro Civitas Nova 2007 awards has awarded four Ex Aequo awards in the single sustainable architectural culture and town planning category to the El Toyo estate in Villa Mediterránea -Almería- developed by Ecovi.

Designed by the architects Margarita de Luxán, Ricardo Tendero and Pedro Nau and built by FCC, the project unites energy, social, technical and publicity criteria with sustainability cultural values that reflect the incipient incorporation of these criteria in current architecture.

In El Toyo, also known as the Alborán Oasis, Ecovi has built a tourism and leisure complex in an area very close to the Cabo de Gata natural park, of low density and with 80 per cent of the land dedicated to green areas. It contains 351 homes designed bearing in mind the area's climate, with solar panels, modern automation systems and an optical fibre installation.

This estate complies with the strictest quality controls of the International Olympic Committee and was chosen as the official residence for the Mediterranean Games 2005. Now it has been recognised as a clear step towards the environmental city.
