FCC Construcción has explained at the Esri Spain Conference, the largest event in Europe on geospatial technology, which brings together more than 2,800 professionals, 200 projects, 150 presentations (in 20 simultaneous sessions), different round tables and workshops for two consecutive days.

Under the motto “Creating the world we want to see”, some of the most innovative projects in the application of geospatial technology in Europe have been presented at the Esri Spain Conference, which show different ways of using Geographic Information Systems (GIS, for its acronym in English), to create a better world, with a holistic approach, that is, where a problem or challenge can be addressed from all points of view, applying science and technology.

Geospatial technology as a corporate system: digital transformation

GIS is a powerful means to help organizations carry out digital transformation on a global level, and at any scale. This involves its integration into business processes and operations, allowing the organization itself to take advantage of geospatial information to make strategic decisions, manage resources, analyze data and track assets in a business environment.

The world is actively modernizing its infrastructure and GIS is at the center of this transformation. Building sustainable infrastructure requires a deep understanding of each asset, its location and the relationship to what is around it.

In this sense, Juan Ramón Mena, Digital-BIM Manager at FCC Construcción, explained during his presentation at the plenary session, how the company is a pioneer in the digitalization of construction processes, and how Information Modeling for Construction has been integrated. (BIM, for its acronym in English), and GIS, in the 465 Heads of the Valleys Highway project in Wales (United Kingdom) with the objective of monitoring and tracking the activities of the work to unfold the current route .

For Jose Carlos Rico Perez, Manager of the BIM department at FCC Construcción, “FCC is a leading company in innovation, it is committed to the digitalization and positioning of its projects as levers of social, economic and environmental transformation. We have designed a geoportal as a meeting point around GIS technology. The objective is to bring innovative and informative digital tools to users, in order to obtain an improvement in corporate procedures and processes, in such a way that we respond to the needs in all phases of the projects. Thanks to Geographic Information Systems combined and integrated with BIM, we provide projects with new collaboration and coordination tools, both with corporate teams and with our stakeholders.”

During the plenary session of the Conference, the future of smart cities was highlighted, and the role that public administrations play for a more sustainable future thanks to the development of Digital Twins; tools that help us monitor the territory, make decisions, simulations and the impact of measures on the environment and even on tourism.

Precisely, the tourism sector will have a prominent presence during the Conference since companies and public administrations use GIS to collect data on tourists' preferences and behaviors, with the aim of more efficient planning and management of resources.

It is treated as a meeting point around GIS technology with the aim of bringing users closer to digital tools that add value to our projects.

Through this portal, access will be provided to those projects where there is a GIS implementation, with a brief description of them that can be accessed by any interested person. Access to specific GIS portals is subject to the permission management of the projects themselves.

The implementation of functionalities within the portal will be progressive, with the idea of responding to the different types of needs in all phases of the projects.
