FCC completes the Transmontana dual carriageway

FCC has completed the Transmontana dual carriageway between Vila Real and Bragança in Portugal, which is now fully open to traffic.
This highway connects the northwest with the northeast of Portugal and forms part of the Trans-European Transport network that allows the connection of the A-4 dual carriageway that starts in Oporto (Matosinhos), with the Spanish border and Europe.

Because of the paralysation of the Marão Tunnel, it was necessary to design an additional junction (Parada de Cunhos) in order to direct the Transmontana dual carriageway traffic flow from the Corgo Viaduct to the IP4, which is being put into service today.

In 2008, Estradas de Portugal contracted the joint venture UTE Autoestradas XXI, formed by Globalvía Infraestructuras and made up of FCC and Bankia in equal proportions, together with the Portuguese company, Soares da Costa for the sub-concession of this dual carriageway for a period of thirty years.

The project was constructed by the joint venture UTE CAET XXI, formed by 25% FCC Construcción, 25% RRC, the Portuguese construction company belonging to Grupo FCC and 50% Soares da Costa.

The Transmontana dual carriageway is a contract for the design, construction and maintenance of a new 194-kilometre dual carriageway that consists of 32 kilometres of new construction, 106 kilometres of splitting and 56 kilometres of conditioning and improvement of the existing IP4.
The project includes the conditioning of the Sierra de Marão crossing, an area with steep slopes and a difficult route that have been reduced by these works with the improvement of the actual accident rate.
Two agglomerate plants were installed for the construction, which produced more than one million tonnes.

Seventeen special viaducts were constructed, among which the Corgo Viaduct is noteworthy with its 2,780-metre length and maximum deck height over the river of 230 metres, which make it the second highest in Spain. This cable-stayed bridge is south of Vila Real and crosses three national and subsidiary highways and the Corgo railway lines.

More than 2,500 people worked on this dual carriageway, of which 80% were local labour.

The project took environmental care into account. An environmental impact survey was carried out at the beginning and the necessary measures were taken to protect the surroundings and achieve landscape integration of the new highway. Fauna passes were executed for livestock and the protection of species, such as the Iberian wolf, which is in danger of extinction.

The new dual carriageway runs parallel to the existing IP-4 and is included within a programme of dual carriageways that consists of .seven concessions with a total length of 1,500 kilometres and 3,000 million Euros of investment launched by the Portuguese Government in 2008.

The Transmontana dual carriageway is going to connect the entire northern area of Portugal and will reduce travelling time by up to 40%, while improving user safety at the same time. A significant fall in the accident rate is also expected.
