The FCC team in Qatar completes the viaduct works of the Doha Metro

Last week, FCC completed the viaduct construction works, which correspond to the red line of the Doha Metro. FCC, as leader of the consortium comprising the companies Yuksel (Turkish) and Archirodon (Greek), is carrying out the work on that section.

The completion of the viaduct was the main midpoint milestone of the contract with the country's railway authority, which established major fines in the event of non-fulfilment. Our client marked the completion of the milestone by officially congratulating our Joint Venture.

The objective was extremely difficult to achieve due to third party influences: unavailability of land, disrupted services, traffic diversions, etc., which impacted on the performance rate envisaged in the initial technical planning.  Such events forced adjustments to be made in the works schedule, adapting to the reality faced with new and complex solutions to achieve the productivity required.

The total constructed viaduct spans 6.9 km, of which 5.3 km is double track and 1 km is single track. Three types of construction used were: a launching gantry for precast segments (main method, using three gantries), single box girders (single-track sections) and in situ (unique sections).

The handing over of this section to the client was urgent because the section tests on the rolling stock and rail systems are to be carried out on that particular section, which also provides access to the depots. The contract continues underway on the other pending works: three elevated stations, the main structures of which have already been constructed and the architecture and installation stages are beginning, and a 1-km motorway section that goes underground and runs lengthwise along the main viaduct stretch.
