FCC Construcción publishes its fourth sustainability report

FCC Construcción has published its sustainability report for 2007-2008, prepared according to the international G3 standard of the Global Reporting Initiative, with A+ classification, checked by an independent third organisation, AENOR. The company prepares its report every two years and updates it in between. In this new edition, the company has continued its commitment to dialogue and information transparency with all interested parties to inform them of its financial, social and environmental progress. Each chapter describes the objectives and results for 2007 and sets the targets for 2008.

In 2007, the company had a turnover of €6,957 million with an increase over the previous year of 58.3 per cent. Of the total turnover, el 41.2 per cent comes from abroad. The most important events in the past financial year that influenced the finances of the FCC Construcción group, were the consolidation of the controlling shareholding in Alpine, the forming of Globalvía Infraestructuras, SA, to which the concessionaire companies will gradually be transferred, and the sale of Reparalia.

Socially, the notable news has been the creation of 2,506 jobs, 836 of them in Spain, the signing of the agreement with the Adecco Foundation for the employment of the handicapped, which has allowed the starting of the Family Plan, the care of health at work with accident figures far below those for the sector and the encouragement of the professional development of employees, with over 193,000 hours of training given.

In environmental matters, the report shows the degree of application and the company’s progress in the system for implementing best practices in all areas: relationships with society, air emissions, generation of noise and vibration, water tipping, occupation, pollution or loss of soil, use of natural resources, generation of wastes and land planning. Environmental improvements of the original project have been introduced in 20 per cent of projects evaluated and 97.1 per cent of projects obtained 51 points, the minimum required by the company, applying the criteria set in the basic environmental planning and control guide.

arious of the company’s actions have been distinguished with prestigious awards, such as the Mies Van der Rohe price for the Museum of Contemporary Art in León, designed by the architects Emilio Tuñón and Luis Moreno Mansilla, the Puente de Alcántara award for the T4 terminal at Madrid’s Barajas airport, by Lamela and Rogers, and the Garrigues Expansión award in the Sustainability and Social Responsibility category for the biannual publication of the environmental reports.

FCC Construcción is the reference company in the building sector in Spain with activities in America and western and eastern Europe; its activities include civil engineering and building, giving employment to over 26,000 persons.
