FCC Construcción publishes its Strategy to fight against Climate Change 2023-2026

Strategy to fight against Climate Change 2023-2026

The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity and its development. For this reason, it is urgent that measures be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve the international commitment established in the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5°C.

FCC Construcción's commitment to reducing emissions and fighting climate change is firm, and proof of this is that its Climate Change Strategy has been a differentiating factor for the company since it developed a protocol in 2010 for measuring Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, a key aspect to know which activities generate the most emissions and to be able to apply effective measures to minimize them.

During the year 2022, FCC Construcción has been working on updating its Strategy to combat Climate Change, which defines its roadmap through quantifiable targets to reduce GHG emissions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, but also adaptation, to increase the resilience of the company and the natural environment in the face of climate change. Prior to the development and definition of measures and objectives, an exhaustive study was carried out to identify risks and opportunities associated with climate change under the recommendations of the Working Group on Climate-related Financial Information Disclosure (TCFD, for its acronym in Spanish). English). It should be noted that FCC Construcción was the first Spanish company and the first construction company in the world to join the Sustainable Finance Working Group of the United Nations Global Compact, clearly marking the company's commitment to continue collaborating with the United Nations.

The document incorporates three strategic lines with quantifiable actions and objectives that include objectives of mitigation, adaptation and improvement in the governance of climate change.

  • The first strategic line, Mitigation, establishes the actions that FCC Construcción must work on to achieve a 35% reduction in GHG emissions in scope 1 and 2 in 2030, as an intermediate objective to become carbon neutral in 2050.
  • Through the implementation of the second strategic line, Adaptation, FCC Construcción seeks to improve its construction processes to offer infrastructures that are more resilient to climate change.
  • Lastly, the third line, Governance, seeks to improve the decision-making process at the organizational level through continuous monitoring of new climate-related policies and initiatives, as well as the risks and opportunities that they may bring.

The materialization of FCC Construcción's commitment to the fight against climate change in this Strategy, made up of solid, ambitious and measurable mitigation and adaptation objectives, will allow the company to act effectively and rhythmically in this fight, serving as inspiration to other companies.

Without a doubt, FCC Construcción is a pioneer company in sustainability and the publication of this strategy is a clear example of the company's commitment to continue creating value in society through its contribution to reducing emissions and increasing the community strength.
