The Community

FCC Construcción collaborates with the communities in which it operates and works on different projects geared towards the most disadvantaged people. It supports children and youths, culture, sport, and the solidarity-based economy.

Some of the activities we have carried out on projects include:

Road safety awareness:

In connection with the works carried out on the Vía Brasil Corridor I-II, FCC implemented a road safety awareness project in nearby schools, incorporating the following activities:

Training on road safety

  • - Information campaigns on accident prevention in school areas.
  • - Refurbishment of school areas: within the scope of the Vía Brasil Corridor Section 2 Projects, the facilities of José A. Remón Cantera and Richard Neuman colleges were cleaned and refurbished with the aim of promoting the well-being of students and teachers.

Health:

FCC believes that safeguarding health in communities is of paramount importance. For this reason, it implements initiatives aimed at preventing health-related problems and securing healthy living conditions. Among the activities carried out, it is worth pointing out the following:

  • Noise and dust mitigation in communities surrounding "El Coco" quarry, in the district of La Chorrera, which were produced during mining works.
  • With a view to providing assistance to the country during emergencies, FCC supplied machinery and company staff to help out during the national emergency that occurred in the Cerro Patacón Landfill towards the end of March 2013. FCC staff equipped with backhoe excavator shovels, dump trucks, loaders, tractors, water tanks, light towers and other equipment, worked day and night to assist the Authority for Urban and Domestic Waste in extinguishing the fire that partly spread through the capital city causing environmental pollution.
  • - FCC and the Ministry of Health of Panama conducted health and fumigation days in the areas surrounding the projects.

Sport:

At FCC, we firmly believe that sports can facilitate a positive link between our projects and the community. In this regard:

We provide sports equipment and trophies to the Community of La Valdeza's internal football league, in the district of La Chorrera, where one of our quarries is located.

We are building a multiuse court and a play area for communities surrounding the quarry.

We support the group 'Discovery Surfing Talents' which trains under-18s in this discipline.

Culture:

Endorsing culture is another important CSR area for FCC in Panama. Different initiatives are implemented each year to boost culture and child education. These include:

  • Holding reading workshops for children at La Valdeza school and donating environment-related books for primary school children at the Llano Largo school in the district of La Chorrera.
  • Refurbishing the Rubiano Institute, located in the district of San Miguelito, as part of the "My School First" program coordinated by the national government of Panama.

Dialogue

FCC's corporate social responsibility policy is committed to establishing channels of dialogue with stakeholders. This ensures that there are opportunities to listen to what individuals have to say and develop collaborative solutions with shared value. This is why FCC is committed to information transparency. Where people are better connected year after year we are able to meet the expectations of all target groups.

Ensuring the community is kept up-to-date on the works being carried out in the city and having a telephone line for any reports and suggestions have been crucial aspects on several projects.

FCC offers civil engineering students from all universities in Panama the chance to visit the projects on a tour led by an engineer from the company.

It maintains communication with schools close to the quarry area with the aim of providing continuous support for education.

In conjunction with the National Institute of Vocational Training for Human Development, it offers training and courses to locals in the areas surrounding the projects with the aim of enhancing their quality of life.

Bi-lateral communication channels have been established to ensure continual contact with our stakeholders so as to discover their information needs and expectations.

Community issues are looked at closely by our engineers on each project. Meetings are held to discuss the progress of works, to define safety measures and to listen to suggestions from locals.

In addition, community affairs offices have been established on projects where they are required.
