Campaign against the breeding grounds of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which transmit the dengue virus.

Description of the social and environmental activity

Challenge:

High rate of people infected with the dengue virus in the Guanacaste province.

Solutions:

FCC Construcción in Costa Rica rolled out a campaign in 2013 to eliminate the breeding grounds of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, transmitters of the dengue virus. The campaign was undertaken with a team from the works to collect and transport waste from the communities near the project. The aim was to eliminate any potential breeding ground of the virus-transmitting mosquitoes.

Results:

Around 2,600 people benefitted from the cleaning and collection of waste. The community of Cañas worked in close coordination in the main outbreak hotspots before seeking the help of FCC Construcción.
